The Iowa C.O.P.S. organization, dedicated supporters, and survivors have attempted on several occasions to get support in passing legislation that would allow fallen officer’s families to receive health insurance if their loved one was killed in the line of duty. Although we were unsuccessful in getting legislation passed to ensure every fallen officer’s family continued to recieve health insurance through their agency, we were successful in getting a limited dollar amount allocated to financially help fallen officer’s families who are struggling to pay insurance premiums and medical bills associated with the hardship of loosing their health insurance benefit. In 2019 the Iowa Public Safety Survivor Benefit Fund was enacted, which is a step in the right direction of helping direct survivors by assisting with medical related expenses that are causing a hardship in their lives.
To be considered an eligible applicant for these funds, you and/or your child(ren) must have been covered by the fallen officer at the time of their death. If you are a direct Iowa survivor, and believe you qualify, please fill out the form below, provide all necessary documents, and mail your packet by October 1st to;
Attn; Healthcare Committee
P.O. Box 52
Granger, Iowa 50109
or email your packet to our current President Yanira Scarlett at firstname.lastname@example.org to be considered for assistance. Any questions can be directed to our chapter President Yanira Scarlett at email@example.com. Questions will be forwarded to the Healthcare Committee to answer and will only be answered in email form so their is no confusion.
Filling out an application does not guarantee financial assistance, as funds are limited. Each application will be evaluated by the health fund committee to determine how funds will be dispersed based on need and hardship.
